2004 ASA SOFTBALL BAT STANDARD
As of October 1, 2003 the
following applies:
There are now 3 standards that apply
each based on ball exit speed. These standards are:
98 MPH Standard
This is the new ASA 2004 Bat Standard. The bat must have a ball exit speed
rating of less than 98 MPH in both slowpitch and fastpitch. On bats that
test below the 98 MPH rating you will find the new ASA 2004 certification
logo. All slowpitch and fastpitch bats that meet the ASA 98 MPH Standard
must also meet the BPF 1.20 standard.
100 MPH Standard
This standard incorporates many bats that have been available to you in
the past. These bats would have the ASA 2000 certification logo on it. Bat
manufacturers must cease production of these models by June 30, 2004.
HOWEVER, players may continue to use these models INDEFINITELY
after June 30, 2004 in accordance with ASA's license agreement. Get these
bats now before they are all gone!
100+ MPH Standard
Bats in this category will not be legal in ASA play but will be legal in
USSSA, NSA, ISF and other associations using BPF 1.20 as the performance
standard.
The information is based on data
provided by our vendors and sales reps and is not an official sanction of
the ASA.
SUMMARY:
Unless on the current ASA Banned List , you can use ANY bat that has
an ASA 2000 or ASA 2004 Certification logo on the bat. It is suggested that
you bring a copy of the Banned Bat List with you to games so if there is a
question by the Umpire you are prepared to present the facts. The biggest
change in 2004 is that 100 MPH bats will no longer be manufactured and,
through attrition, all bats will meet the 98 MPH standard in future years.
